Description:

VTI adheres a high pressure plastic laminate to a wood substrate using a solvent based glue. The advantages are a fast dry down and it holds odd shapes. The disadvantages are the stack release of N-hexane and toluene, the fugitive release of N-hexane and toluene and the creation of a flammable waste stream (liquid and solid). The solution to this was to substitute a water based glue for the solvent base they currently use.

P2 Application:

Wilsonart, the glue supplier, worked to develop a water based glue that is relatively fast drying like the solvent based glue, does not rely on VHAPs and can be sprayed using current equipment.

Environmental Benefits:

The environmental benefits of the water based glue are:

  • No VOCs,
  • No HAPs, and
  • the waste stream is heading to zero.
