Texas Eastman

Year Submitted: 2003

Process: Process Control

Industry: Chemical Manufacturing

Wastes Reduced: VOC Emissions

Substance: Benzene

Location: Longview, Harrison County TX

No. of employees: 2700

Contact: Glenn Phillips

Phone: (903) 237-5354

Description:

As part of a fugitive emissions program Texas Eastman found that control valves are a major contributor to air emissions because of frequent movement of the valve stem against the valve packing. Long term fugitive emission reduction goals could not be met by any valve packing available on the market. Many control valves had leakage rates of 4,000-10,000 ppm. New legislation requires 500 ppm or less. The new packing reduces emission to less than 50 ppm, a 99% reduction. The reductions are not just when first installed, but sustainable over an extended period (two years to date).

P2 Application:

A new improved control valve packing was developed to meet tough new standards for benzene NESHAP regulations, TRI reductions, and the 1990 Clean Air Act. Over a two year period Texas Eastman in a cooperative program with Fisher Controls and Vinson Supply developed the new replacement valve packing. The packing is currently marketed under the trademark Enviro-SealTM by Fisher Controls.

Environmental Benefits:

Will reduce emissions of benzene and other VOCs from about 3,000 control valves by about 150,000 pounds a year.

Details of Reductions

Additional Information :

Decrease loss of chemical products and reagents amounts to a savings of $25,000 a year.
