REVIEWED P2 OPTIONS
for the
Oil and Gas - Well Treatment Process

Following are a set of P2 options you may wish to implement. No option is perfect for everyone, but sometimes options that have worked at one facility can work at yours. They might also serve as inspiration.

Reviewed Oil and Gas - Well Treatment Options

Following are a list of options that have been reviewed by pollution prevention specialists. These options have worked at other facilities and may work at yours.

Reduce drums and containers

Switch to purchase of materials and chemicals in bulk containers, reducing the amount of drums requiring handling. Added benefit: less drum handling results in fewer spills and releases requiring cleanup (of contaminated soil).

Use recyclable drums and containers

Purchase materials in returnable/recyclable drums and containers.

Manage chemical inventory

Control inventory by accurately estimating amounts required, or ordering small quantities only as needed.

Exchange unused chemicals

Offer (or exchange) unused chemicals to other facilities in lieu of recycling, treatment, or disposal.

Explore less hazardous products

Determine whether non-hazardous or less hazardous products are available by asking manufacturers representatives and trade groups.

Reuse produced water

Recycle water in hydrotesting of pipeline, equipment, and tanks.

Manage fracturing fluids

  • Use mix-on-the-fly systems for fracturing fluids.
  • Recycle unused fracturing oil back into production stream.
  • Plan fracturing job carefully to avoid mixing unnecessary fluids.
